Circle Collective, also known as gnomefatty kollektiv, has produced electronic music, art, and other creative, conscious, non-commercial events since 1998. Circle / gnomefatty is run as a non-profit collaborative, and includes seasoned band of promoters, DJs, PA music performers, dancers, and artists. Circle formed from the merger of Boston-based video-performance art group Noise Laboratories <
www.noiselabs.com> with a number of local artists and DJs seeking to attend high-quality, low-cost dance and multimedia events that were open to all ages. After failing to find such events in the Boston area (where most organized dance events cost $20 or more), the group decided to take matters into their own hands, and began their own weekly electronic music night in Cambridge, calling it Circle. Circle ’s Tuesday night events ran for three consecutive years, ending in the Fall of 2001. The group continues to produce one-time only events throughout the year, including all-night dance and music events (such as the wellknown Noise Lab ’s Martin Luther King celebration, “Seed, ”“Sprout ”), teach-ins on the prison system (“FreedomTV Live! ”), free dance parties along the Charles River, guest nights at the Phoenix Landing’s Wednesday Redlight events, art and interactive performance events, and full-day events such as the Fairy Picnic. Circle / gnomefatty also has affiliations with Mission Control <
www.miscon.net>, Redlight <
www.redlightproductions.com>, and Changmian Productions <
www.changmian.com> all well-known organizers of events in the Boston area. Several of the DJs involved in Circle regularly broadcast shows on WZBC 90.3 FM in Newton, MA, one of the nation ’s leading alternative / experimental radio stations <wzbc.org>. Circle does not pay DJs, unless they are coming from New York City or further; instead Circle asks guest DJs to volunteer their time (as do the organizers). The collective owns its own sound system, including lights and a fog machine. Graphics, art, interactive artwork, and multi-screen video projections are a consistent feature of Circle events. All Circle events are not-for-profit, and never advertised, in accordance with the wishes of the collective. The collective does not allow publicity and news features of any kind. There is however, a public announcement-only mailing list (“circle-announce”) and a unmoderated discussion list (“thecircle”) on Yahoo Groups <
groups.yahoo.com>. Despite the below-the-radar approach to p. r., Circle events are well-attended, owing to good word-of-mouth and deeply-rooted support within the progressive dance and arts community.
